Overview

When a Director of Food Services at Robert Wood Johnson Barnbus Hospital was invited to speak at a prestigious national healthcare conference, he faced a critical challenge: transforming his content-rich but visually poor PowerPoint into a professional presentation. With no design experience and high stakes on the line, he turned to me, Paul Mansfield, for help. This case study highlights how I took his rough draft and crafted a polished, engaging slide deck that elevated his message, boosted his confidence, and left a lasting impression on his audience.

The Challenge

A seasoned Director of Food Services at a major hospital was selected to speak at a national healthcare conference on the topic “How to Report to Your Boss.”

While the director had extensive knowledge in hospital operations, food service management, and executive communication, he had no experience creating PowerPoint presentations. He came prepared with well-developed content, but his draft slides were poorly formatted, visually overwhelming, and lacked cohesion.

With no time to learn PowerPoint design from scratch—and with the pressure of representing his hospital on a national stage—he reached out for professional help.

The Solution

I took the rough draft file and transformed it into a visually engaging, on-brand presentation that clearly communicated his message. Here’s how:

  • Slide Structure Overhaul: I reorganized the slide flow for clarity, ensuring each point built logically and smoothly into the next.

  • Visual Design: I applied clean, modern slide layouts that reflected a professional tone suitable for a national healthcare audience.

  • Custom Graphics & Icons: Instead of generic clip art, I used custom visuals to reinforce key ideas and make the data more digestible.

  • Consistency & Branding: Fonts, colors, and spacing were standardized to align with the hospital’s brand while maintaining legibility and visual appeal.

  • Speaker Support: I designed slides that worked as visual aids, not crutches—enhancing the speaker’s authority and keeping the audience engaged.

The Results
  • The director delivered his presentation with confidence, receiving compliments on how clear and professional the slides were.

  • He was able to focus fully on content delivery without worrying about the technical aspects of the presentation.

  • After the conference, several attendees asked him for a copy of the deck—proof that the presentation made a lasting impact.

  • He expressed how relieved and grateful he was to have a partner who could take his content and turn it into something he was proud to present.

Testimonial

“I had the content, but no idea how to make it look presentable—let alone professional. Paul took my messy draft and turned it into a presentation I was proud to stand in front of. The design was clean, the flow made sense, and I got great feedback from the audience. I can’t thank him enough.”
